About the Program
Per- and Polyfluoralkyl Substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as "Forever Chemicals", have been linked to a multitude of environmental contamination incidents and health hazards all over the world. Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) has been used as the gold standard of fire protection and suppression for flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline and jet fuel for over 60 years, and PFAS is a key component in its formulation.
Once advertised as completely safe, AFFF must now be phased out of all fire suppression apparatus utilized by municipal and airport fire departments as well as industrial and commercial fire suppression systems due to the health and environmental contamination risks posed by its continued use. New fluorine free foams are becoming available, but the questions remain as to how do we remove PFAS from existing apparatus and suppression systems, and what do we do with the legacy AFFF once we capture it?
