VIRTUAL REALITY TRAINING

A FIRE SERVICE RESEARCH STUDY

vr training

Project Background

Five Bugles Institute is conducting research to identify the value and applicability of Virtual Reality (VR) training in today's fire service environment.  We recognize various types of cancer as a primary threat to the health and safety of fire service personnel as well as the decreased existing opportunities for firefighting activities in the training and emergency response environments.  We are exploring project concepts for future instructor-facilitated programs in order to help increase confidence in skills application without increasing the risk of cancer.

  • National statistics and industry trends show decreasing availability of live fire events in the emergency and training environments
  • Modern construction methods provide for fires which burn hotter, produce significant Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments, and are prone to earlier collapse
  • Significant research has identified fire service personnel at higher risk for multiple types of cancer
  • Company officers are promoting at younger ages without significant experience in the application of firefighting tactics, strategies, or understanding of fire behavior environments

 Phase 1 Survey

We have gathered research through the use of a survey to help gauge the experience, interest, and applicability of VR training in the fire service. Thanks to the cooperation of multiple agencies, we have a current data pool of nearly 3000 fire service-based survey responses.

Project Goals

Provide opportunities to increase confidence and competence for personnel in the application of multiple skills-based environments

Decrease the risk of cancer to fire service personnel

Combine project research with the above goals to develop and provide instructor-facilitated programs to help increase confidence in skills application without increasing the risk of cancer.

Phase 2 Research

Phase two of our project will involve a series of 1-day presentations to be held at our headquarters in Pasco County, Florida.  The presentations will discuss the results of our initial research and provide a practical evaluation and feedback opportunity on an immersive VR training system.
